James Lever & Sons was established by the first James lever in 1856, Cotton bindings collected from the mills around Bolton were transformed into sturdy rope and sold back to the Mills as transmisson ropes the business grew and moved to the Everlasto Rope Works in Delph Street.
As mill machinery became more sophisticated, with less dependency on rope transmission drive James Lever & Sons learned the first rule of a successful business, versatility.
The subsequent generations of Levers branched out into manufacturing a diverse range of products - plaited cords, full range of twines, sash cords. In 1953 a new product was introduced by James Lever & Sons to the UK - the PVC clothes line.
